With Advantage Valley, the sky isn’t the limit—it’s just the launchpad. That’s what Navy veteran and drone expert David Crabtree Jr. discovered when he turned a lifelong passion for aviation into a thriving business, Appalachian UAV Academy, in Milton, West Virginia.
David’s journey began in the U.S. Navy, where precision, discipline, and technology shaped his approach to flight. As drones began transforming industries, he saw an opportunity not just to participate—but to lead. That vision led to the creation of Appalachian UAV Academy, a training center designed to equip students with the skills and certifications needed to enter the fast-growing unmanned aerial systems (UAS) industry.
Founded with a simple mission to turn students into skilled, FAA-certified drone pilots, the school is a regional leader in drone education. But David’s journey from hobbyist to entrepreneur wasn’t without its challenges. That’s where the FASTER WV entrepreneurship program stepped in to help his business take off.
David connected with Bryan Shaw, a FASTER WV business coach, during the early stages of the Academy’s development. “Bryan was instrumental in helping me build the business side of the operation,” David says. One of the first key milestones was setting up essential accounting software, which brought structure and professionalism to the Academy’s day-to-day operations. This practical support helped David focus on what he does best, teaching and flying, while ensuring the business could grow on a solid foundation.
What makes Advantage Valley’s FASTER WV program so effective is its flexibility. Whether it’s help with financial tools, marketing strategy, customer outreach, or navigating regulations, the program connects entrepreneurs with targeted support tailored to their needs. For David, that meant getting the backend of his business in order. For others, it might mean refining a pitch, improving digital visibility, or launching a new product line. Whatever the hurdle, Advantage Valley works to help turn entrepreneurial ideas into thriving, resilient businesses.
With that guidance, Appalachian UAV Academy has steadily grown its reach and impact. The school now attracts a wide range of students, from beginners with no drone experience to professionals preparing for FAA Part-107 certification or advancing into specialties like thermal imaging and aerial cinematography.
The Academy’s flagship program “Zero to Pilot” takes students from novice to licensed commercial drone operator in a matter of weeks. With hands-on flight hours, rigorous exam prep, and real-world applications built into the curriculum, Appalachian UAV Academy helps launch students into a career.
The impact goes far beyond the classroom. David regularly partners with local emergency agencies and fire departments to bring drone capabilities to first responders. He mentors youth through school presentations, encouraging the next generation of technologists in Appalachia to dream big. His academy also helps students navigate the FAA certification process, making drone licensure more accessible to rural communities.
What started as a personal passion is now a high-impact business. Appalachian UAV Academy is evolving beyond a training school into a vertically integrated drone ecosystem—spanning workforce training, technology and manufacturing through AUA, federal partnerships like MITRE, and real-world deployment with regional agencies.
With the continued support of FASTER WV, David’s vision for Appalachian UAV Academy is taking flight, training pilots, building careers, and proving that with the right support, passion can become reality.
